The Job Application

Two major labels were looking for adult contemporary ballads suitable for female vocalists. Think Celine Dion, Toni Braxton, Oleta Adams, Christina Aguillera and you’re in the ball park.

The End Result

Dear Music Xray Artist,

The music industry professional has listened to your song.  The song you submitted Freedom  (from your album Free Spit) has been listened to by the industry professional Donald J. Ferro.

Unfortunately, while your song was considered for this opportunity, it has not been selected.  While the industry professional did not choose your song for this opportunity, they did leave you the following message in regards to your submission:

“Freedom” by Jacqui Stephens.

This is a very nice piece of writing; classic adult contemporary structure and format and very nice production work on the demo as well…also a very nice vocal track. You should know that it did make it through several rounds of approval but regretfully, it didn’t make the final cut with our final decision board.  They had some concerns about the hook in the chorus having a broad enough mass commercial appeal; the kind needed to support a single in today’s marketplace.   Of course, these things can be so very subjective and even more difficult to articulate.     We certainly did enjoy listening to your work.  This was a quality submission. Best of luck with all of your musical endeavours. Sincerely, The A&R Staff at Sweet Rosie Music

Here are two quick tips that you may or may not appreciate but they will definitely help you when submitting material for consideration.  Push the lead vocal track forward in the mix and ALWAYS include a lyric sheet with the submission.  With Music X-ray this is a simple “cut and paste.”  Your songs will be received better if, when in a group meeting, each person can have a copy of the lyrics right in front of them. It helps to keep “screener's,” at all levels (from preliminary screener's to final decision makers), focused on your every word; exactly where you want them focused.    That benefits both you and the “screener.” Best of luck with all of your musical endeavours.  Your writing talent is obvious.

Good candidate but regretfully it doesn’t make the final cut.

Donald J. Ferro.

The Single Release

PRESS RELEASE - London - August 31st 2012.

There perhaps is something in the water in Rochdale, Lancashire. Jacqui Stephens is a new talent from the same town that gave the world the soulful voice of one Lisa Stansfield. Going through the process of paying dues for many years in and around the Lancashire area saw Jacqui audition for ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ the day before she signed to her current management and record company, ‘Billberg Entertainment/Twaang Records of Sweden.

Even from an early age Jacqui has always wanted to sing in front of an audience and set her sights on a career in the music industry. Her musical roots are steeped in the sounds of Jessie J, Shirley Bassey, Whitney Houston, The Beach Boys, The Sylistics, Michael Jackson and of course Lisa Stansfield. A number of years learning the ropes and the ins and the outs of the music business taught Jacqui important lessons about life behind the scenes but the one thing that was most important for her was the emotion expressed through her voice.

Her amazingly powerful vocals can be heard all through her new album, ‘Free Spirit’ which is released in November, 2012.

The world will get a taste of Jacqui’s amazing voice when the first single from the album called; ‘Upon Reflection’ is released middle of October.

The End Result

Dear Music Xray Artist,

The music industry professional has listened to your song.  The song you submitted Freedom  (from your album Free Spit) has been listened to by the industry professional Ian Kaine MacGregor.

Unfortunately, while your song was considered for this opportunity, it has not been selected.  While the industry professional did not choose your song for this opportunity, they did leave you the following message in regards to your submission:

Can't use currently but we're keeping this one on file for future reference.

Hi Jacqui!  While I'm choosing "not selected" for this I want to share that it's only a matter of style.  Your voice is quite beautiful and if I had to use a single word I would call your voice "grand".  I can't currently fit you into our portfolio but I will certainly keep your info for future contact.  If you have a mailing list please add me to it and let's stay in touch.

Ian.
